Painting Block Paving: A Guide for Villa Owners in Spain

Block paving can be painted successfully when it is made of concrete, laid firmly and cleaned thoroughly, and when the joints are sound. The coating turns a bleached, patchy mix of blocks into one even colour, but it also changes some things about how the paving behaves, and those are worth understanding before you decide.

Which kinds of paving can be painted?

Concrete block paving is the type that suits painting best. It is the most common paving on driveways and paths in villa developments, and its colour fades as the surface wears, while the blocks themselves usually stay sound.

  • Concrete blocks (adoquín de hormigón): good candidates once clean and firm.
  • Clay pavers and bricks: dense and often still attractive; cleaning is usually the better route, and they are outside our standard service.
  • Natural stone setts and slabs: valued for their natural look and not something we paint.
  • Imprinted concrete with a cobble pattern: not block paving at all, but it can look like it, and it recolours very well.

If you are not sure which you have, a close-up photo usually settles it. Our paver painting service covers concrete blocks; plain and imprinted slabs fall under concrete painting.

Why do loose or sunken blocks rule out painting?

Block paving is a flexible surface: each block sits on a bed of sand or similar material and is held by its neighbours. When the bed settles or washes out, blocks drop or rock, and a coating laid across them will crack along every movement.

So the test is simple. Walk across the area, drive slowly over the drive and watch for blocks that move, tilt or sound hollow. Those areas need lifting and relaying by a paving contractor first; we do not relay paving, and painting over the problem would only waste the money.

Paint gives block paving a new colour, not a new bed: a driveway that rocks underfoot needs relaying before anything else.

How do joints affect painted paving?

Joints are the weak point of any block-paved surface, and they become even more important once it is painted. Loose sand, weeds and algae in the joints prevent the coating from bonding and leave ragged lines across an otherwise clean colour.

A careful job cleans the joints out, removes plant growth and refills any that are open or eroded before the first coat. The colour then runs over block faces and joints together, giving an even look in which the outline of each block remains visible.

Does painting change how paving drains?

It can. Some block paving lets a little water pass through the joints, and a film-forming coating over blocks and joints reduces that. On most driveways rainwater runs off the surface towards drains and gardens anyway, but if your paving was laid deliberately as a permeable system, coating it may work against its design.

If your drive has drainage channels and a fall towards them, those stay unchanged by painting. Areas where water already ponds, though, will still pond after recolouring; a coating does not change levels.

What changes underfoot after painting pavers?

The surface feels smoother. Bare concrete blocks have a slightly open, gritty texture, while coated blocks have a continuous film, which makes them easier to sweep and rinse and gives them a fresher look.

That smoother texture means grip deserves a thought on slopes, steps and around pools. Slip resistance is given on the product data sheet (to be verified for each product), and the finish should be chosen with that in mind; the same goes for any protective layer described on our concrete sealing page.

What colour works best on painted block paving?

One solid colour usually works best. Faded block paving often has a mixed pattern that has aged into a muddle, and a single tone calms it down while keeping the shape of the blocks visible.

Dark greys suit modern villas and hide tyre marks; warm terracottas suit traditional houses and red roof tiles. A contrasting band along the edge can frame a drive neatly, but recreating a multicolour pattern block by block rarely stays neat. Our colour and sheen guide goes deeper into the options.

What should you ask before having block paving painted?

A few direct questions separate a careful contractor from a quick one. Their answers should be specific to your paving, not general reassurance.

  • How will the joints be cleaned and which ones need refilling?
  • Which blocks do you consider too loose to paint over, and who would relay them?
  • Which coating is proposed, how many coats, and which data sheet conditions apply?
  • How will edges against walls, gates, drains and planters be finished?
  • What slip resistance does the finish have on slopes or near the pool?

Our contractor checklist expands on these questions for any outdoor painting job.

Is cleaning enough, or does the paving need colour?

Clean first and judge afterwards. Some paving looks surprisingly good once the dirt, moss and black algae are gone, and if you are happy with that, painting is unnecessary.

If, after cleaning, the blocks are still pale, patchy or marked by old repairs in different colours, recolouring is what makes the difference. Our article on alternatives to painting paving compares cleaning, recolouring and relaying side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Can clay brick pavers be painted?

Clay pavers are dense and often keep their colour well, so cleaning is usually the better route. They are outside our standard service, which covers concrete block paving, plain concrete and imprinted concrete. If you are unsure what your paving is made of, send a close-up photo.

Will painting stop the blocks from moving?

No. A coating is a surface layer and does not bond the blocks to their bed or to each other in any structural way. Blocks that move need relaying before painting, otherwise the paint will crack along the movement. A paving contractor can relay them first.

Does the paint go into the joints?

Yes, the coating covers the joints along with the block faces. That is why joints are cleaned and repaired before painting. The outline of each block remains visible, so the paving still reads as individual blocks in one colour. Loose joint sand would undermine the finish.

Is painted paving still permeable?

A film-forming coating reduces the amount of water that can pass through the joints. On most driveways that makes little practical difference because rain runs off the surface, but on paving designed as a permeable system, painting can conflict with its purpose.

Can you paint paving with lots of weeds?

Yes, once the weeds and their roots are cleaned out of the joints and the joints are repaired. Heavy weed growth often points to wide or eroded joints, which adds to the preparation work and should be visible in your photos.

How does painted block paving cope with car tyres?

Driveway coatings are chosen for vehicle traffic according to their data sheet. Turning tyres on a hot day are among the toughest conditions any coating faces, so the product's stated resistance to traffic and abrasion matters. Avoiding sharp turns on a freshly cured surface also helps.

Can I paint just the worn part of the drive?

It is technically possible, but painted patches on faded paving tend to stand out clearly. Recolouring a whole area from edge to edge almost always looks better. If budget is a concern, it may be wiser to do the driveway now and the paths later.

Will my paving look like new blocks?

It will look evenly coloured and fresh, but the blocks keep their existing shape, chips and texture. Chipped edges are repaired before painting, which helps. The result reads as well-kept paving in a new colour rather than freshly laid blocks.

Is painting paving cheaper than relaying it?

Recolouring avoids lifting, a new bed, new blocks and waste removal, so it is generally far less disruptive. The actual figures depend on your area, condition and access. Our pricing site explains how the per-square-metre rate is worked out.

Can a community have its shared paving painted?

Communities of owners can recolour shared paved areas, with the decision and budget usually agreed through the administrator and the owners' meeting. A quote based on photos and the approximate area can be presented to the meeting for approval. Photos of the whole area help.
