Faded Block Paving: The Alternatives to Painting, Compared
For faded block paving there are five realistic routes: cleaning on its own, cleaning plus joint work, a clear sealer, recolouring with a coloured coating, or lifting and replacing the blocks. The right one depends on whether your problem is dirt, colour, joints or a failing base, and only one of those calls for paint.
Send us a photo and the m²What are the options side by side?
Each option solves a different problem. The table summarises what they change and what they leave untouched; we only carry out the recolouring route ourselves.
| Option | Solves | Leaves unchanged | Disruption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning only | Dirt, algae, moss, some stains | Faded colour, patchy blocks | Low |
| Cleaning and joint work | Weedy, washed-out joints | Faded colour | Low to moderate |
| Clear sealer | Adds finish to good colour | Fading, mismatched blocks | Low |
| Recolouring (our service) | Faded, patchy, mismatched colour | Block shape and levels | Moderate |
| Lifting and relaying | Sunken, rocking, broken blocks | Nothing; it is a new surface | High |
How do you work out which problem you actually have?
Look at the paving after rain and again when dry. Dirt and algae show as dark, greenish films that a wash removes; faded colour stays pale even when clean; washed-out joints show as gaps and weeds; base failure shows as dips, rocking blocks and puddles in the same places every time.
Many villa drives have more than one problem at once, typically faded colour plus tired joints. In that case the order matters: the base first, then the joints, then the colour. Getting that sequence wrong is how money gets spent twice.
Is cleaning alone ever enough?
Often, yes. Block paving that looks grey and tired may be hiding its original colour under algae and grime, and a thorough wash can bring back much more than owners expect.

If you are happy with the paving after cleaning, stop there. Our sister site on block paving cleaning covers that route in detail.
What about re-sanding or repairing the joints?
If the blocks still have good colour but the joints are empty, weedy or washed out, joint work is the targeted fix. Refilling joints helps lock the blocks together and gives weeds less room.
Joint-only work across a whole drive is a paving contractor's job rather than ours. When we recolour paving, open joints are repaired as part of preparation, as described on our paver painting page.
Would a clear sealer do the job?
Only if the colour is still good. A clear sealer adds a finish and some protection, but it shows every faded block, mismatched repair and stain underneath.
We compare the two in our article on coloured coatings versus clear sealers, and the protective side of our own system is described under concrete sealing.
When is recolouring the best alternative?
Recolouring is the right choice when the blocks are firm and the joints can be repaired, but the colour has gone for good. Bleached reds, patchy greys and drives where replaced blocks never matched all look like one deliberate surface again after two coats.
It sits between cleaning and replacement: much more visual change than a wash, with none of the excavation of relaying. The same approach applies to plain slabs under concrete painting.
When is lifting and relaying unavoidable?
When the base has failed. Blocks that rock, dips where water collects, ruts in the wheel tracks and broken blocks across large areas all mean the bed underneath needs rebuilding.
No finish, clear or coloured, can fix that, and we do not relay paving. Once a paving contractor has relaid the area and it has settled, recolouring can follow if the new blocks do not match the old.
What about laying a new surface over the top?
Overlay systems, such as new surfacing laid over existing paving, are a form of new construction rather than renovation. They change levels at doors, drains and gates, and they need the existing base to be sound.
We do not lay new surfaces. If you are considering one, a surfacing contractor can advise; if what you want is your existing paving in a fresh colour, recolouring is simpler.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to improve faded paving?
Cleaning is usually the least involved option and sometimes all that is needed. If the colour is still faded after cleaning, recolouring is the step that makes a visible difference. Relaying is the most involved and is only necessary when the base has failed.
Can I clean now and paint later?
Yes. Cleaning first lets you see the real condition and colour of the paving before deciding. If you later choose to recolour, the paving is cleaned again as part of the preparation, because dirt and algae return over time. That way the decision rests on what is really there.
Is a clear sealer cheaper than recolouring?
A clear finish generally involves less material and less brushwork than a pigmented two-coat system, but it cannot fix faded or mismatched blocks. Comparing them only makes sense if both would give you the look you want. The look you want should decide, not the price alone.
Do you re-sand block paving joints?
Not as a standalone service. When we recolour paving, open or eroded joints are repaired as part of preparation. If your paving only needs joint work and you are happy with the colour, a paving contractor is the better choice.
Can new replacement blocks be colour-matched by painting?
Recolouring the whole area after repairs gives new and old blocks the same colour, which solves the mismatch problem. Painting only the new blocks to match the weathered ones rarely works well, so we recommend recolouring the area from edge to edge.
Is relaying ever better than painting?
Yes, when blocks are sunken, rocking or broken across large areas. In that case the base has failed, and painting would crack along the movement. Relaying solves the cause; recolouring can follow later if the colour needs unifying. A paving contractor handles the relaying itself.
Can paving be painted after relaying?
Yes, once the relaid paving is firm and the joints are complete, it can be cleaned and recoloured like any other concrete block paving. This is a common way to make new and reused blocks look like one surface. It is a common sequence on older villa drives.
Which option suits a rental villa best?
It depends on the condition. If cleaning restores the look, it is quick and simple. If the paving has faded badly, recolouring gives a much stronger first impression in photos and on arrival, with work planned between bookings. Plan the dates so guests never arrive to wet paint.
Will painting make block paving look like concrete?
No. The outline of each block stays visible because the coating follows the shape and joints of the paving. The result looks like block paving in a new, even colour rather than a continuous slab. Chamfered edges and bevels stay visible as well.
How do I know which option my paving needs?
Send us photos of the whole area, close-ups of the joints and any loose or sunken blocks. We will tell you honestly whether cleaning, recolouring or a different specialist is the right route. If recolouring is not right for your paving, we say so.
