Is Painting Your Outdoor Concrete Right for You?

Who is this for? ·

Painting outdoor concrete suits owners whose surfaces are sound but faded, who want a visible change without demolition, and who are happy for the colour to be renewed every so often. It does not suit surfaces that move, owners who want the bare concrete look kept, or anyone hoping paint will cure a structural, drainage or damp problem.

Who gets the most out of painting their concrete?

Owners whose driveways, patios and paths are structurally fine but look tired get the most from recolouring. The concrete is firm, the cracks are fine and stable, and the problem is fading, patchiness or a pattern that has lost its contrast.

  • Villa owners who want the entrance to match the care they put into the house and garden.
  • Owners who let their villa and want listing photos and arrivals to look fresh.
  • Owners preparing to sell, for whom the first view from the gate matters.
  • People who live abroad and want a visible improvement without managing a building project.
  • Communities with shared paths and entrances that look worn but are basically sound.

Which surfaces suit recolouring best?

Imprinted concrete is one of the best candidates, because the pattern usually survives while the colour fades. Plain concrete driveways and paths and firm concrete block paving also recolour very well.

Who should not paint their concrete?

Owners whose surfaces are moving or failing should not paint, at least not yet. Sinking areas, rocking slabs or blocks, wide cracks that grow each year and surfaces breaking into loose pieces all need the cause fixing first.

Painting is also not for owners who love the natural, bare look of their concrete and only want it cleaner, or for surfaces we do not work on: tiles, natural stone, interior floors, industrial floors and car park line marking.

If the honest answer for your surface is 'not paint', we will say so, and point you towards the kind of specialist you need.

What if the problem is damp or drainage?

Then paint is not the solution. Persistent damp coming through a slab can push a coating off from below, and water that ponds in hollows will still pond after recolouring, because a coating does not change levels.

Those issues need understanding before any finish is chosen. If the damp has an obvious cause, such as irrigation soaking one corner, fixing that may be enough to make painting viable.

Does painted concrete suit a busy family or a holiday home?

It suits both, in different ways. For a family home, a coated drive and patio are easier to sweep and rinse, and spills are easier to deal with. For a holiday home, the surface looks fresh on arrival and is straightforward for cleaners to maintain.

What both need to accept is that an outdoor coating eventually needs refreshing, at an interval set by the product and the use. Our care guide explains how to keep that interval as long as possible.

Either way, the deciding question is not the type of household but the condition of the surface. A sound slab suits a busy family and an empty holiday home equally well.

Is it right for pool surrounds?

It can be, with care. Pool surrounds in concrete or imprinted concrete recolour well, but grip has to be decided before colour, using the slip rating on the product data sheet (to be verified for each product).

Owners who want the surround to feel very textured underfoot should raise it at the start, so the finish is chosen with that in mind. Our page on coloured resin coating explains how the system is selected.

How do you know which group you are in?

Send photos. A wide shot, close-ups of cracks, stains and joints, and a note about anything that moves or stays damp are usually enough for us to tell you whether recolouring suits your surface. Our contractor checklist also helps you judge any advice you receive.

Frequently asked questions

Is painted concrete suitable for a new-build villa?

If the concrete is new, the coating's data sheet will state how long the slab needs to cure before it can be painted. On a new build the colour is often still good, so painting may not be needed at all yet. It becomes worthwhile once the surface fades.

Is it suitable for an old, heavily cracked driveway?

It depends on the type of cracks. Fine, stable cracks are filled as part of the job and painting works well. Wide, growing cracks or sunken areas point to movement, and the slab needs repair or replacement before any recolouring is considered.

Can I paint concrete if I rent the property out?

If you are the owner, yes. Tenants on long-term contracts should agree any changes with their landlord. For owners letting short-term, the work is planned between bookings so guests are not affected. We plan dates with the owner, not the guests, and send photos if you are away.

Is painting suitable if I want a natural look?

Not really. A coloured coating changes the look by design, giving an even, painted finish. If you want the natural appearance of concrete or stone, cleaning is a better route. We will tell you honestly if your aims would be better served another way.

Do you paint garage floors?

We paint exterior surfaces such as driveways, carports, garage aprons and parking bays. Interior garage floors inside the house are outside our service, as are industrial floors and line marking for car parks. Carports and garage aprons are a natural fit for recolouring.

Is it suitable for a community garage entrance?

Shared outdoor entrances, paths and paved areas in communities can be recoloured if they are sound. The decision usually goes through the administrator and the owners' meeting. Interior communal garages and line marking are not part of our service. Photos of the area are enough to start.

Can I paint concrete on a slope?

Yes, sloping drives and paths can be painted, but grip becomes more important. The finish is chosen with the slip rating on the product data sheet in mind, and the slope also affects access and working time, which is reflected in the quote.

Is painted concrete right if I have dogs?

Normal pet traffic is generally fine once the coating has cured. Dogs that dig or scratch at one spot can mark it, and pets must be kept off until the data sheet's curing time has passed. Darker or mid tones hide paw prints better than very light ones.

Is it worth it if I am selling soon?

Sellers usually want the entrance to look cared for in listing photos and at viewings. We do not make claims about property values, but a fresh, even driveway does improve the first impression. Planning the timing around photography helps. Ask early so dates fit.

What if I am still not sure?

Send photos and describe what bothers you about the surface. We will tell you whether recolouring would solve it, whether cleaning might be enough, or whether a different specialist should look first. There is no obligation to go ahead. A straight answer costs nothing.
