What Really Drives the Cost of Painting a Driveway in Spain
The cost of painting a driveway is driven far more by the condition of the surface and the shape of the area than by the paint itself. Square metres set the baseline; cracks, old coatings, edges, steps and access decide how far the job moves from that baseline.
Send us a photo and the m²Why is the price usually given per square metre?
Because area is the one factor every job has in common. Cleaning, rolling the two coats and much of the preparation all scale with the surface, so a per-square-metre rate is the fairest starting point.
It is only a starting point, though. Two driveways of the same size can need very different amounts of work, which is why a photo-based quote is more useful than a figure from a website. Our pricing site shows the indicative price per m² and what it includes.
How much does the condition of the surface matter?
A great deal. A firm, open slab with a few fine cracks needs a wash, a little filling and two coats. A drive with many cracks, chipped corners, small potholes and open joints needs each of those repaired before painting, and that time is part of the price.
If cracks are wide, keep reopening or come with sunken areas, painting is not the answer at any price; those need a specialist first, and a contractor who quotes to paint over them is not doing you a favour.
Does old paint or sealer change the cost?
Yes. Sound old coatings that are compatible with the new product can often stay, which keeps preparation simple. Flaking paint or failing sealer has to be removed before anything new goes on, and that extra work appears in the quote.
This is one of the biggest hidden differences between quotes. A low price that ignores peeling old paint usually leads to the new coat failing with it, as our guide on why driveway paint peels explains.
Why do edges, steps and planters add to the price?
Because they are painted by brush rather than roller. Every metre of edge along a wall, every step, post, drain cover and planter has to be cut in carefully before the open area is coated.
- A large rectangular drive has relatively little edge for its area.
- A winding garden path has a lot of edge for very few square metres.
- A patio with columns, steps and built-in planters needs the most brushwork of all.
- Block paving adds joint preparation on top of the edge work.
That is why concrete painting on an open driveway and paver painting on a narrow paved path can cost differently per square metre even when the paint is the same.
How does access affect the cost?
Difficult access slows every stage. Steep drives, long flights of steps, areas the van cannot reach and gardens where equipment has to be carried through the house all add time.
Hillside villas, which are common on parts of the Costa del Sol, are a typical example. Mention access in your message and include a photo of the approach, so the quote reflects it from the start.
What is usually included, and what is not?
In our standard job, cleaning, repairs of cracks and small defects, brush cut-in and two coats of synthetic resin paint are all included. That makes comparison easier, because there is no separate charge for preparing the surface properly.
Not included are services we do not offer at all, such as relaying sunken paving, structural work, interior floors, industrial floors and line marking. Our quotes are given with IVA added, and the applicable rate depends on Spanish tax conditions explained on our quote page.
How do you get an accurate figure quickly?
Send good photos. A wide shot of the whole area, close-ups of cracks, stains and any peeling paint, a photo of the approach and an approximate size in square metres let us price the job realistically the first time.
For patios with lots of detail, add a photo of the edges and steps; our patio and terrace painting page shows the kind of detail that matters. If anything is unclear, we arrange a visit before giving a firm quote.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't you publish a price on this site?
Our pricing information is kept on a dedicated site so it is consistent across all our services. It shows the indicative rate per square metre and what it covers. Because the size, state and reach of each surface differ, the figure for your own job is set out in a written quote once we have seen your photos.
Is the price the same for a driveway and a path?
The starting rate is per square metre, but a narrow path with many borders and steps involves far more brushwork per square metre than an open driveway. That difference shows in the quote. Sending photos of the edges helps us price it accurately.
Does crack repair cost extra?
Repairing cracks and small defects is part of our standard job rather than an add-on. Very extensive damage may affect the total because it takes more time, and wide or moving cracks may rule painting out altogether. Photos of the cracks let us tell you early.
Is removing old paint included?
Cleaning is always included. Where old paint or sealer is flaking and must be stripped before recoating, that additional work is assessed and stated in the quote. Sound, compatible old coatings can often stay, which keeps preparation simpler. Photos of the peeling areas help.
Does the colour I choose change the price?
In most cases the colour choice itself does not significantly change the price. A contrasting border or a two-colour design does, because it adds brushwork and careful cut-in lines. Tell us about any design ideas when you ask for a quote.
Will a bigger area cost less per square metre?
Larger open areas are often more efficient to paint than small, detailed ones, because the proportion of edge work is lower. The quote reflects the actual work involved rather than applying a fixed discount. Combining several areas in one job can also help.
Are there extra charges for travel?
We are based in Marbella and work across Málaga province. Any relevant travel considerations are reflected in the quote rather than added later. Send your location with the photos and we will include everything in one written figure. Everything is set out in writing before work starts.
Is IVA included in your quotes?
Quotes are given with IVA added on top, and this is stated clearly. Which IVA rate applies to renovation work on a home depends on conditions set by Spanish tax rules. Our pricing site explains these in general terms. Ask us if anything is unclear.
Can I reduce the cost by doing the cleaning myself?
Preparation is where most painting failures start, and the standard required depends on the product, so we normally keep it in our scope. Clearing furniture, pots and vehicles before we arrive is always helpful and saves time on the day.
How do I compare quotes from different contractors?
Check that each quote covers the same things: cleaning, which repairs, removal of failing coatings, brush cut-in, the number of coats and the type of coating. A cheaper quote with one coat and no repairs is not comparable to a full job. Our contractor checklist helps.
